Membership

Membership of the Society is open to individuals and organizations interested or involved in fostering, developing and supporting the application of biotechnology in the country. Any company, association, individual or other body may apply to the Executive Secretary to become members of the Society as detailed in the Membership Charter.

Membership Categories

The Society has five membership categories:

Ordinary Membership

Scientists, researchers, academicians, farmers, consumers, media, and policy and decision makers can apply for the membership of the Society.

Fees:
Registration TZS 50,000 paid once
Annual subscription: TZS 60,000

Corporate Membership

Both public and private institutions including R&D organisations, industries, media, traders and manufacturers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and community based organisations (CBOs) can apply to corporate membership.

Fees:
Registration TZS 50,000 paid once

Annual subscription
Government institutions: TZS 250,000
Small-medium sized enterprises/NGOs: TZS 300,000
Large scale enterprises/NGOs: TZS 500,000
International organisations: USD 200.

Student Membership

Any student persuing biological or social science or other related studies can apply for the membership of the Society provided they are students at the time of application. A certificate of the studentship status of current date from the Head of the Department/Institute must be submitted by the applicant along with the application for the student membership. Students qualify for a special low student rate and may receive determined privileges as long as they remain students.

Fees:
Registration: TZS 6,000 paid once
Annual subscription: TZS 24,000

Guiding Principles

The BST members shall be guided by the following principles:

  • Be respectful; treat other members respectfully as BST is a diverse community and people with different skills and backgrounds have different perspectives on issues. The Society will not tolerate harassment or discrimination.
  • Be welcoming; members of this Society have different backgrounds and experiences. Members are expected to be welcoming as the Society strives to create an environment that is warm, friendly, helpful, and inclusive.
  • Be considerate; the outcomes of BST activities will be impacting many stakeholders so be considerate when making choices and decisions.
  • Be collaborative; collaboration between people that each have their own goal and vision is essential. Collaboration reduces redundancy and improves the quality of our work. Wherever possible, work closely and transparently with other members of BST.
  • Be a team player; need to be a member who will unify, mentor and empower others for a purpose of attaining the BST goals. Our Society can only grow stronger if we are adventuring together.
